Sunsets at Pier 60: Everything You Need to Know About Clearwater Beach’s Most Popular Free Event

There’s something special about ending the day at Sunsets at Pier 60. Every evening, Clearwater Beach’s iconic pier transforms into a lively yet relaxed celebration featuring local artisans, talented street performers, and one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll see on the Gulf Coast.

The best part? It’s completely free and happens every single night (weather permitting). Whether you’re visiting with family, as a couple, or as a snowbird looking for an easy evening activity, Sunsets at Pier 60 is one of those experiences that feels uniquely Clearwater Beach.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly what to expect, the best way to enjoy it, and why staying on the quieter north end of Clearwater Beach makes experiencing this nightly tradition even better.

What is Sunsets at Pier 60?

Sunsets at Pier 60 is a long-running nightly tradition on Clearwater Beach. It takes place in Pier 60 Park and features a rotating mix of local artisans selling handmade goods, street performers, musicians, and vendors. The event typically begins about two hours before sunset and continues for a couple of hours after, giving visitors plenty of time to wander, watch the entertainment, and enjoy the view as the sun dips below the horizon.

It’s completely free to attend and has become one of the most popular things to do in Clearwater Beach, especially in the evenings.

What to Expect at the Pier 60 Sunset Celebration

The atmosphere at Sunsets at Pier 60 is lively but relaxed. You’ll find rows of tents and booths with local artists and crafters selling jewelry, artwork, photography, and souvenirs. Street performers often juggle, dance, or play music, and there’s usually a small stage area with live entertainment.

Many people come just for the sunset itself, which is widely considered one of the best on the Gulf Coast. Others enjoy fishing off the pier (there is a small fee for fishing) while taking in the views. The event draws a mix of locals and visitors, creating a friendly, community feel without feeling overly crowded or commercial.

Best Time to Visit: Sunsets at Pier 60

The celebration runs year-round, but the experience can vary slightly depending on the season.

  • Spring and Fall: Often the most pleasant times to attend. The weather is comfortable, crowds are moderate, and the sunsets are spectacular.
  • Summer: Still beautiful, but expect warmer temperatures and potentially larger crowds, especially on weekends.
  • Winter: Popular with snowbirds. Evenings can be cooler, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea.

As I mentioned in our guide to the best time to visit Clearwater Beach, Spring and Fall seasons tend to offer the most comfortable balance of weather and crowds.

How to Get to Pier 60 from North Clearwater Beach

One of the nicest things about staying on the north end of Clearwater Beach is how easy it is to reach Pier 60 without dealing with heavy traffic or parking hassles.

Our condos are located on a quieter stretch of beach that’s still very walkable to Pier 60. Most guests find it’s a pleasant 15–25 minute walk along the beach or the sidewalk. It’s close enough to enjoy the event easily, but far enough away that you return to a much calmer and quieter area in the evening.

If walking isn’t ideal, a short rideshare, taxi, or the Jolley Trolley are all convenient options. Many of our guests find they don’t need a car at all during their stay.

Things to Do Near Pier 60

Pier 60 is conveniently located, with several nearby activities worth adding to your evening.

Restaurants Near Pier 60

There are several excellent restaurants within easy walking distance of Pier 60. Many offer outdoor seating with views, making them perfect for dinner before or after the sunset celebration. From casual beachfront spots to slightly more upscale waterfront dining, you’ll have good options right in the area.

Some of my personal favorites:

Water Activities at the Marina

Directly across the street from Pier 60 is the Clearwater Beach Marina. This is a great spot if you want to add a boat tour, dolphin watching cruise, or parasailing adventure to your day. Many of these excursions depart in the late afternoon or early evening, so it’s easy to combine them with a visit to Sunsets at Pier 60.

My kids love Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise!

Why Stay on North Clearwater Beach for Pier 60

Staying on the north end of Clearwater Beach offers a nice balance when visiting Sunsets at Pier 60. You’re close enough to walk or take a very short ride to the celebration, yet you return to a noticeably quieter and more relaxed stretch of beach afterward.

Our beachfront condos give you direct access to the sand and Gulf, along with private balconies where you can enjoy morning coffee or evening breezes. The units are spacious, with full kitchens and in-unit laundry, making them especially comfortable for families or longer snowbird stays. Many guests appreciate being able to enjoy the energy at Pier 60 in the evening and then return to a peaceful setting without the noise and crowds of the busier south end.

Spring in Clearwater Beach (March – May)

Clearwater Beach Spring

Spring feels like Clearwater Beach is waking up. Temperatures are comfortable, the Gulf is warming nicely, and there’s a gentle buzz of activity without the full summer intensity – with the exception of a week or two for young families on Spring Break.

Weather & Beach Conditions

Daytime highs climb from the mid-70s in March to the mid-80s by May, with lows in the 50s–70s. Gulf water temperatures rise from the upper 60s to the upper 70s — perfect for longer swims and beach play as the season progresses.

Events & Things to Do

This is one of the most event-packed times of year. Catch Philadelphia Phillies Spring Training games at nearby BayCare Ballpark (typically late February through late March). The Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival (usually late March into mid-April) is a highlight — massive illuminated sand sculptures, live music, and family-friendly fun right on the beach. Other nearby draws include art festivals and music events in the broader Tampa Bay area.

Crowds, Atmosphere & Pricing

Moderate crowds, especially around spring break and training games. Availability and rates fluctuate around the popular spring break times each year.

Why Families & Snowbirds Love It

Great weather for beach days, park visits, and exploring without extreme heat. Many families time visits around school breaks or to combine beach time with spring training games. Snowbirds often extend stays into Spring because the weather is beautiful.

Our north Clearwater Beach condos are especially nice in spring — you get easy direct beach access and private balconies for morning coffee or sunset watching, plus plenty of space for snowbirds to extend winter into spring and have family come to visit for a short Spring Break trip.

Summer in Clearwater Beach (June – August)

Summer is classic family vacation season on Clearwater Beach. The energy is high, the water is at its warmest, and there’s always something happening.

Clearwater Beach Rainbow

Weather & Beach Conditions

Daytime highs hover around 90–91°F with lows in the mid-70s. Gulf water temperatures peak in the mid-80s (often 85–87°F in August) — ideal for all-day swimming, boogie boarding, and sandcastle building. Expect typical Florida afternoon thunderstorms; they usually pass quickly and cool things off nicely.

Events & Things to Do

July 4th brings fireworks and celebrations. Water sports such as parasailing, jet skis, and dolphin tours are in full swing. The nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 celebration runs all year, but summer adds extra vibrancy with street performers and vendors.

Crowds, Atmosphere & Pricing

This is peak season — expect more people on the sand and at popular spots. It’s lively and fun, especially if you love that classic bustling beach town feel. Book early! It’s peak season, and the condos do book up fast.

Why Families Love It

Perfect for families who want warm water and non-stop beach activities. Full kitchens in our condos are a lifesaver when you’re feeding a crew after long beach days and can also help with costs and quickly feeding hungry kids when restaurants are busy. The north end of Clearwater Beach, where our condos are located, tends to feel a bit quieter even during peak times, giving you a peaceful home base with direct beach access.

Fall in Clearwater Beach (September–November)

Fall is my personal favorite time on Clearwater Beach – specifically in October. The weather is simply wonderful — warm enough for beach days and swimming, but without the heavy summer humidity or crowds. And it has one of my personal favorite events – the Stone Crab Festival.

Clearwater Beach Fall

Weather & Beach Conditions

Highs range from the upper 80s in September down to the upper 70s by November, with lows in the 60s–70s. The Gulf stays beautifully warm (mid-70s to mid-80s) thanks to the long summer heat — often the best swimming of the year. Rain chances decrease as the season progresses.

Events & Things to Do

The Clearwater Jazz Holiday in mid-October is a major highlight — several days of fantastic live music. It’s also stone crab season, so you’ll find fresh local seafood at spots like Frenchy’s. The island feels relaxed and welcoming.

Crowds, Atmosphere & Pricing

Crowds thin out significantly after Labor Day, and you’ll often find better rates. It’s peaceful without feeling empty. While the overall Clearwater Beach area is quieter. It’s not just my personal favorite time of year; our beachfront condos do tend to book quickly through these months, even with it being a less crowded beach.

Why Families & Snowbirds Love It

Ideal temperatures for long beach walks, balcony time, and exploring without overheating. Many snowbirds arrive in the fall and stay through winter. Our quiet north Clearwater Beach location shines here — it’s especially peaceful when the rest of the island is winding down from summer, yet you’re still just a short walk or quick ride from great restaurants and the energy at Pier 60 when you want it.

Clearwater Beach Thanksgiving - pumpkin pie with a beachfront view

Thanksgiving is a time for families to be together. If your family is spread out in different cities, consider a family Thanksgiving at the beach! It’s beautiful weather for the beach, the pools are heated, and the full kitchens in our beachfront condos make it a perfect place to cook your family’s favorite Thanksgiving meal! Just imagine having the Thanksgiving Day Parade on the condo’s large TV, a warm coffee on the beachfront balcony, and a day full of family fun at the beach and in the pool.

Winter in Clearwater Beach (December – February)

Winter brings that magical “warm escape” feeling. It’s milder and quieter, making it perfect for snowbirds who want to settle in comfortably.

Clearwater Beach Winter

Weather & Beach Conditions

Daytime highs are usually in the low-to-mid 70s, with cooler evenings in the 50s. Gulf water is at its coolest (around 64–69°F), so swimming is more of a refreshing dip than all-day sessions for most people. Beach walks and outdoor activities are still very enjoyable.

Events & Things to Do

Holiday lighted boat parades light up the waterways. Christmas markets, concerts, and festive events pop up around Clearwater and nearby communities. New Year’s Eve often features fireworks and celebrations near the beach and Pier 60 area.

You can also enjoy short drives to Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, and other surrounding communities to truly enjoy the whole area.

Tarpon Springs Christmas Tree

Crowd’s Atmosphere & Pricing

The quietest and most peaceful time, especially January and early February. It’s a true snowbird haven — relaxed and uncrowded.

Why Families & Snowbirds Love It

Many of our guests stay for a full month or more, with family visiting for long weekends. Heated pools at our condos make a big difference on cooler evenings. The north Clearwater Beach area feels especially calm and restorative, with direct beach access for morning walks and private balconies for enjoying the milder days. Full kitchens make it easy (and more affordable) to host family meals when everyone gathers.

A Note on Hurricane Season

Hurricane season officially runs June through November, with the highest risk for Clearwater Beach usually appearing in September or early October. The good news is that modern forecasting gives plenty of advance notice for our safety.

What is the best time to visit Clearwater Beach, Florida for families?

Truly anytime of year – but it can be difficult to schedule trips when kids are in school. So our most common family rentals are summer and mid-March through mid-April for Spring Break.

Outside of these times, those shorter fall breaks are a great time to visit Clearwater Beach, as the weather is beautiful and the area is a bit less crowded.

When is Clearwater Beach least crowded?

January through early February are the least crowded times. September through early October is usually quiet as well, with a slightly higher risk of hurricanes (see more about hurricanes below).

When is the Gulf water the warmest?

Late summer into early fall (August through September) usually has the warmest Gulf temperatures. With that said, the Gulf waters are almost always comfortable to swim in outside of parts of winter. You can see the overall water temperatures by season throughout this post.

Is winter too cold for the beach?

Not at all – daytime weather is lovely for walks and outdoor time. Many snowbirds love it, and our heated pools keep things comfortable all year round. Even on a windy winter day, a beach walk with feet in the water while wearing a swimsuit and a hoodie is a great time!

Ready to Plan Your Perfect Clearwater Beach Getaway?

No matter which season calls to you, Clearwater Beach delivers. The white sand, sunsets, and easygoing island feel are here year-round — they just show up in slightly different ways.

Florida Hockey - Outdoor Ice Hockey in Florida

Florida is known for fun in the sun, warm weather all year round, swimming and fishing in the Gulf of America and … hockey? Yes! Florida hockey, even outdoors on the ice!

Florida Hockey (NHL) Teams

Warm and sunny Florida has two NHL hockey teams. The Tampa Bay area has the Tampa Bay Lightning, who stand today with 5 Stanley Cup appearances and 3 Stanley Cup wins. If you head south, you’ll find the Florida Panthers in Miami. The Florida Panthers, who had a great 2024-2025 season, brought home their second Stanley Cup out of their now 4 Stanley Cup appearances.

Outdoor Hockey in Florida

For the first time in NHL history, there will be two outdoor NHL games played in Florida in the 2025-2026 season.

On January 2, 2026, you’ll be able to see the New York Rangers playing against the Florida Panthers at LoanDepot Park in Miami for the 2026 NHL Winter Classic. One month later, on February 1, 2026, you’ll be able to watch the Boston Bruins vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Raymond James Stadium for the NHL Stadium Series.

Clearwater Beach Weather & Events - August 2023

Clearwater Beach Weather – August 2023

The Clearwater Beach weather in August is a typical Florida summer. It can be hot, sunny, and rainy, all within the same day. The hot sun warms the air quickly, with highs reaching the upper 80°s and low 90°s. This means the ocean water stays very warm and in the upper 80°s. These high temperatures create summer thunderstorms. They usually don’t last long, but they can be strong. Please be careful and get out of the water, off the beach, and go inside if you see lightning or hear thunder. You will usually have beautiful mornings. As the air gets hot, you may see showers or storms build throughout the day. These storms usually clear up, and you’ll be back on the beach soon to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
