North Clearwater Beach

North Clearwater Beach

Clearwater Beach is a small barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The beautiful sunset views and soft white sand have made Clearwater Beach an award-winning vacation location. The white sand beaches stretch two and a half miles from the south side of the island to North Clearwater Beach.

Why I love staying on North Clearwater Beach

There are many places to stay on Clearwater Beach. One decision that is often overlooked is the difference between staying on North Clearwater Beach or on the south side of the island. I personally love staying on North Clearwater Beach.

The beach on North Clearwater Beach is less crowded

One of the best parts of North Clearwater Beach is that the actual beach is less crowded. While Clearwater Beach is a public beach, the most crowded areas of the beach are South Beach and the areas near Pier 60. As you head further north, the beach will become less crowded. Giving you more room to choose a relaxing spot near the calm ocean or a larger area to toss a football or frisbee around.

Restaurants in walking distance

While North Beach is much quieter and less crowded, there are still many fabulous restaurants within walking distance. Some of the best restaurants on Clearwater Beach are close by including Frenchy’s Original Cafe, Palm Pavilion Grill & Bar, Clear Sky Beachside Cafe, and many others!

And if you’re looking for an extremely short walk or even a delivery, check out Angelo’s Pizza on the corner of Mandalay Avenue and Idlewild Street. This is on the same block of Surfside Condominiums or just around the corner from The Villas of Clearwater Beach.

Party areas, bars and nightclubs

…are located on South Beach. Leaving North Clearwater Beach quieter and more relaxing at night.

If you are on a family vacation with young kids, you’ll enjoy having a quieter area, especially at night. Even if you don’t have young children with you, you’ll enjoy being able to sit on the balcony at night, star gaze and hear the waves of the Gulf of Mexico.

North Clearwater Beach has a few bars with more relaxed atmospheres, all within a very short walking distance. If you’re wanting to check out the busier bars and nightclubs on South Beach, it is walkable but may be further than you’d like to walk. Some of the bars and nightclubs on South Beach may offer free shuttles (usually large golf carts), but even if they don’t offer rides they are all just a short Uber ride away. Uber will make getting to South Beach Clearwater quick and inexpensive.

…and when you’re ready to call it a night, it’ll be nice to be able to get back to a quiet bed on North Clearwater Beach.

North Clearwater Beach Vacation Rentals

Surfside Condominiums and The Villas of Clearwater Beach both offer North Clearwater Beach Vacation Rentals with beachfront oceanviews on private balconies, multiple bedrooms, full kitchens, and swimming pools.

Best Clearwater Beach Breakfast

Best Clearwater Beach Breakfast

My favorite Clearwater Beach breakfast is a simple one. Grabbing a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee and taking them out on the balcony overlooking the beach.

For me, it’s hard to beat the simplicity of a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Add a beautiful view, and it’s perfect. But that’s not for everyone. Thankfully, if you’re staying at Surfside Condos of the Villas of Clearwater Beach, you’ll have a full kitchen to cook any of your favorite breakfast meals and a beautiful view from a beachfront balcony! But if you’re not looking to cook breakfast every morning while you’re on vacation, here are the best Clearwater Beach breakfast restaurants!

Walk to Caladesi Island State Park

,
Walk to Caladesi Island State Park

One of the reasons I love staying on the North Beach side of Clearwater Beach, Florida is that it makes it easier to walk to Caladesi Island State Park. Caladesi Island State Park is one of the completely natural islands along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The pristine Gulf Coast island is filled with mangroves, peaceful hiking trails and quiet, soft, white beaches with palm trees even touching the calm waves of the ocean.

There are only two ways to get to Caladesi Island. You can take a 20-minute ferry ride from Honeymoon Island or you can walk to Caladesi Island from Clearwater Beach, Florida!

Yes, you can walk from Clearwater Beach to Caladesi Island. The two islands weren’t always connected, but they are now. The islands used to be separated by Dunedin Pass. In the 1980’s sand began to accumulate, narrowing the pass. Then in 1985, Hurricane Elena rolled up the Gulf Coast of Florida, sealing the pass completely. With Dunedin Pass sealed, Clearwater Beach and Caladesi Island became connected, making it possible to walk from Clearwater Beach to Caladesi Island.

The walk to Caladesi Island State Park from Clearwater Beach is beautiful, but it isn’t a short walk. Before setting out to walk from Clearwater to Caladesi Island, you should pack a small bag with water and a snack. If you’re staying on the North Side of Clearwater Beach (at or near Surfside Condominiums or the Villas of Clearwater Beach) the walk to Caladesi Island State Park is ~2.2 miles. That’s just the “entrance” of Caladesi Island State Park. I say “entrance” because it is only marked with a sign on the beach.

Caladesi Island State Park has public bathrooms and a small snack bar available towards the middle of the island. That area of Caladesi Island is just over a 3-mile walk. While the public bathrooms are always open, the snack bar may not be, so be sure to pack some water.

One of my favorite things about Caladesi Island is to walk to the end of the beach on the north side of the island. It is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful area. With all of Caladesi and Clearwater Beach behind you, you can sit in the soft sand and watch boats travel in and out of Hurricane Pass, the pass separating Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island. With Caladesi Island being so narrow, you can easily tell you’re sitting on the furthest north part of the island. The beautiful view will leave you with a strong sense of accomplishment since it’s a far walk, and you can’t walk any further. From the North Beach area of Clearwater Beach, it’s a ~4.5-mile walk to get there.

Tips for the Walk to Caladesi Island State Park

  • Pack some water and a snack.
  • Bring some sunscreen so you can reapply while you’re on the beach hike.
  • Check the weather before you go and avoid any pop-up rain showers.
  • Start the walk as it is transitioning from high tide to low tide. That way you’ll be able to make it there and back before it’s high tide. (I made this mistake once. One part of the walk to Caladesi Island involves walking past a small line of trees that touch the ocean waves even during low tide. Hit this area during high tide and instead of a cool wave washing across your toes, you may be knee deep. This short part can be avoided by following a trail that leaves the beach, but the trail can hold water after rains as well.)

Clearwater Beach Rainy Day Activities

,
Clearwater Beach Rainy Day Activities

We all dream of relaxing on the beach, feeling the soft sand between our toes and the warm sun on our skin… but that’s not every day at the beach. Sometimes it rains. I love sitting on the balcony, drink in hand, watching the rain. During a light rain, it’s relaxing. During a thunderstorm, it can be beautiful. But for kids, it’s often a boring day, stuck inside wishing to be on the beach. Instead of playing in the sand, you’re just stuck staring at it. If your kids are needing a place to go (or if you’re still a kid at heart and need a place to go yourself) here are some fun Clearwater Beach rainy day activities.

My Favorite Clearwater Beach Rainy Day Activities

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a must-do for the whole family! It’s not your typical aquarium. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a marine life rescue center focused on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick or injured marine animals. While visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, you’ll get a chance to meet Winter the dolphin, star and inspiration of the hit movies Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2, both filmed on location.

Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI)

The Museum of Science & Industry, located in Tampa, is a great place for all day fun! The museum has exhibits on weather, dinosaurs, space, flight, natural disasters, human development life stages, an IMAX Dome Theater and the Saunders Planetarium. If the weather clears up while you’re at the museum, there’s also an outdoor ropes course and zip line!

AirHeads Trampoline Arena

If the rain has you trapped inside and your kids are full of energy, take them to AirHeads Trampoline Arena! AirHeads Trampoline Arena is a full, indoor, trampoline park making it a great place to escape the rain. Just jump around and have fun, play some AirSports like dodgeball or basketball, or have fun playing some arcade games!

Vertical Ventures – St. Pete

Vertical Ventures, located in St. Pete, is a State-of-the-art indoor climbing area! The 20,000 square foot facility features 40-foot tall routes with 80+ climbing lines. Whether you’re climbing for the first time, or if you’re a seasoned pro, you’ll find a safe but challenging, climbing area that fits your level.

Each of the Clearwater Beach Vacation Rentals located at Surfside Condominiums and The Villas of Clearwater Beach have beautiful and convenient kitchens, but you still may be searching for some great Clearwater Beach lunch restaurants. Whether you haven’t made it to the grocery store yet, you’re craving some fresh seafood or just don’t feel like cooking (you’re on vacation after all) – you may find yourself looking for a quick and delicious lunch. Here are some of my favorite Clearwater Beach lunch restaurants.

Frenchy’s Original Cafe

Frenchy’s Original Cafe is always one of my first stops when I’m on Clearwater Beach. When driving around Clearwater, you’ll see the Frenchy name often – there’s 5 different Frenchy’s restaurants, a motel, a seafood company, a stone crab company and a gift shop. (Read all about “Frenchy” and his Clearwater Beach history.)

It all started in 1981 at Frenchy’s Original Cafe with a simple goal: to have a friendly, laid-back place where people could come to enjoy a cold drink and fresh seafood. Frenchy’s Original Cafe (just Frenchy’s Cafe at that time) quickly became a success and the small restaurant became known for its fresh seafood, especially the grouper sandwiches. To keep up with the demand for fresh seafood, Frenchy purchased his first boat and opened Frenchy’s Seafood Company in 1983.

My favorite menu items: Buffalo Shrimp, Grouper Sandwich, Crabby Shrimp Sandwich.

The Bait House Tackle & Tavern

The Bait House Tackle & Tavern makes a great Clearwater Beach lunch location because of its great food and perfect Clearwater Beach atmosphere. It sits on the water at the Clearwater Beach Marina, not next to the water, on the water. It’s an amazing place to grab lunch and enjoy the beautiful, sunny weather. If it’s raining, there are a few spots undercover at the bar, but not many. Equal to the amazing food, the location is just as great. I love watching the boats cruise in and out of the marina.

My favorite menu items: Smoked Fish Spread, Bait House Clam Chowder, Island Fish Tacos, Bait House Burger.

Pearly’s Beach Eats

Pearly’s Beach Eats opened in the fall of 2014, making it the youngest restaurant of my favorite Clearwater Beach lunch restaurants. Pearly’s Beach Eats quickly grabbed a place in my heart. No matter how short my trip is, I can’t visit Clearwater Beach, Florida without grabbing a meal at Pearly’s Beach Eats.

My favorite menu item: Fish Tacos. …I won’t lie, it’s the only thing I’ve ever had at Pearly’s Beach Eats. It was the first thing I tried, and I have not been able to order anything else. I love their fish tacos! You can get them fried, grilled or blackened (blackened is my favorite) and they come with jicama coleslaw, fresh mango salsa and shredded cheese.

While these are some of my favorite spots to grab a quick delicious lunch, Clearwater Beach is full of restaurants and I haven’t had a chance to try them all. What are your favorite Clearwater Beach restaurants? I’ll add them to my list of places to eat next time I’m in Clearwater.
