The building was bought by the city in 1904 after the death of Henry Plant in 1899. It operated as a hotel until 1932. The remainder of the building, as well as the property, became home to The University of Tampa. The Museum houses original Hotel furnishings and art objects collected by Mr. and Mrs. Plant from Europe and the Orient. The Tampa Municipal Museum became the Henry B. Plant Museum in 1974. Since then, its mission has been to interpret the Tampa Bay Hotel at the turn-of-the-century and the Victorian lifestyles of America’s Gilded Age for people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of interest. The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art

150 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

“The James Museum has its roots in the deeply felt passion for art and culture shared by co-founders Tom and Mary James, and in the couple’s love for St. Petersburg, the city where they live.

Years ago, when their travels took them out West, they were captivated by the art, landscape and wildlife. The art of action and attention to place created by contemporary artists greatly moved them, and they began buying pieces not only for their personal pleasure, but also to help the artists earn a living. These two dedicated patrons of the arts collected works in oil, in ink, in stone; works that define genres yet defy labels; works that evoke the spirit of a wide open frontier and the beauty of life in the wild. Since their first acquisition, a vast artistic legacy has grown — one populated by emerging artists and living legends and filled with tribal tradition and classical finesse.

In building this splendid home for a part of their vast personal collection of Western and wildlife art, Tom and Mary also have succeeded in their aim to share their vision and devotion to art with you and thousands of others.”

Tampa Firefighters Museum

720 Zack Street, Tampa, FL 33602

“Built in 1911, this building served as headquarters for the Tampa Fire Department until 1974 when the building across the street was dedicated.

During its active service years, this building presided over the 63 year transformation from horse-drawn apparatus to diesel powered rescue and firefighting vehicles. Stables were removed and bay doors were enlarged for larger and larger vehicles. Some of the worst fires in Tampa’s history were fought by dedicated firefighters rushing out of this building.

After its active service years, the building was used as storage and office space for city programs. Realizing the importance of preserving Tampa’s fire service history, a group of citizens began a 10 year project of raising funds to restore the building and open the Museum. That the Museum is open today is a testament to the persistent hard work and determination of a handful of citizens and firefighters.”

African Americans have played a crucial role in the growth and development of St. Petersburg since the late 1800s. The first African Americans came to this area seeking work. Many of the early migrants worked on the Orange Belt Railroad and other emerging enterprises. Clearwater Beach in One Day

There’s so much to do when visiting Clearwater Beach that you can easily stay for a week or even longer. But, if all you have is a single day, here’s how to maximize your time on Clearwater Beach, Florida!

Morning in Clearwater Beach

If you’re visiting Clearwater Beach for a single day, the first thing you’ll need to figure out is how to get there and where to park when you do! You can avoid the crowded parking and frequent traffic jams headed to the island by parking in Downtown Clearwater and taking the Clearwater Ferry! Keep up with their routes and schedules on their website or the app (available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store).

Taking the Clearwater Ferry not only helps you avoid traffic and parking issues and gives you an opportunity to squeeze a fun boat ride in for your day in Clearwater Beach. I suggest taking the Purple Line leaving from Downtown Clearwater and exiting at North Beach.

If you arrive in North Clearwater Beach in the morning and need breakfast, there are some great places nearby! Within a few blocks, you’ll be able to find Clear Sky Cafe (with a Bloody Mary bar on the weekends), Another Broken Egg Cafe, and Beach Fire Beach Bar & Grille!

After Breakfast, head out to the beach! You’re only steps away from the soft white sand that Clearwater Beach is known for. If you took the Clearwater Ferry to North Beach, you’re in a great area! North Beach is less crowded than South Beach and still has many great restaurants and shops nearby!

When finding a spot on North Beach, look between Sandpearl Resort and Palm Pavilion Beachside Grill & Bar. This area is right next to the breakfast locations mentioned before, a short walk to many stores and great restaurants, and has Clearwater Beach Lifeguards in the area. Being next to the Lifeguards will make it easy to keep an eye on any changing weather conditions or other things to keep an eye on. The Lifeguard stations will be flying flags that mark the conditions on the beach and in the Gulf of Mexico.

Afternoon in Clearwater Beach

After hanging out on the beach for a few hours, you may be interested in some lunch. Keep the great views going and grab lunch right on the beach at Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill or Palm Pavilion Beachside Grill & Bar. If you’re looking for a break from the sun and maybe even some air conditioning, you can grab a delicious Grouper Sandwich at Frenchy’s Original Cafe or head down to Jimmy Hula’s only blocks away!

After lunch, you can stop in at some of the nearby storefronts for a little bit of retail therapy, or even just to pick up some extra sunscreen or beach toys! You can find some great stores nearby like Surf Style, Freaky Tiki Surf Shack, Hulk Hogan’s Beach Shop or just a CVS to pick up an item you’re missing.

After lunch and a quick shopping trip, it’s time to enjoy more of the warm sun! Head back to the beach and enjoy more time in the ocean! If you’re nervous about swimming in the Gulf of Mexico you can also stop by the Clearwater Beach Community Pool that features a 6 lane Junior Olympic size swimming pool and an area for kids with a water slide shaped like a frog, squirting water jets, a mushroom-shaped waterfall and more! In addition to the pool you can also find tennis, basketball and pickleball courts!

Evening in Clearwater Beach

After a wonderful afternoon at the beach, pool or playing on the courts; it’s time to start thinking about some sunset fun!

The order of your evening plans may change based on what time of year it is and what time sunset is. During the summer, sunset is later in the day and may one to grab dinner first. During the winter, the sunset is quite a bit earlier and you’ll most likely want to grab dinner after seeing the sunset.

One of the best places to watch a Clearwater Beach sunset is at Pier 60’s Daily Sunset Festival! In addition to a beautiful sunset; Pier 60 offers a great area for kids to play, shopping from local artists and crafters directly on the pier and some great shows by street performers.

The daily sunset festival starts 2 hours before sunset and ends 2 hours after sunset. This timing allows you to choose the best time to eat dinner either before or after the beautiful Clearwater Beach sunset! Pier 60 is located right in the center of Clearwater Beach and has many restaurants nearby including The Bait House Tackle & Tavern located in the Clearwater Beach Marina for some great outdoor dining!

Nearby Dinner Suggestions

  • The Bait House Tackle & Tavern
  • Marina Cantina
  • Crabby’s Dockside
  • Poke Havana
  • Badfins Food + Brew
  • Ocean Hai
  • Jimmy’s Crows Nest (appetizers and drinks)

Stick around the Pier 60 area after dinner and sunset for a free outdoor movie! Enjoy a free movie under the stars at Pier 60’s Sunset Cinema every Friday and Saturday night! View the schedule of what’s showing here.

Depending on the time you can grab one of the last Clearwater Ferry rides from The Clearwater Beach Marina (located across the street from Pier 60) back to Downtown Clearwater or you get back to your car by taking a short taxi, Uber or Lyft.

While you can pack a lot of fun into a single Clearwater Beach in one day trip, you’ll still be missing a ton of fun things to do! Despite being a small island, Clearwater Beach has so much to offer that you could easily spend a full week and even longer here and not see everything. If you need more time in Clearwater Beach, come stay in our beachfront condos at The Villas of Clearwater Beach or Surfside Condominiums. We offer large luxurious condos with private beachfront balconies, full kitchens, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, swimming pools and more!

See what your beachfront view could be right now with our Live Clearwater Beach Webcam! Save the link and watch the sunset with us every night!

Clearwater Beach Lightning Photography Tips

Lightning is dangerous, but also beautiful. As long as you’re safe, the Florida lightning season can be a beautiful time for Clearwater Beach lightning photography.

Clearwater Beach Lightning Photography Tips

If you are looking to try your hand at capturing some beautiful Clearwater Beach lightning photography shots, here are some tips to help!

The time of year and even the time of day doesn’t really matter. You can capture beautiful lightning photos at any time! However, there is a Clearwater Beach Lightning season. To increase your odds of getting a great lightning photo, you can visit Clearwater Beach when thunderstorms are common.

The Clearwater Beach thunderstorm / lightning season is during the summer when temperatures are hot! It starts in June and lasts until September. Through these months there’s an increase in thunderstorms usually in the afternoon. These storms can come on quickly with a lot of force. They often bring a lot of frequent and strong lightning strikes.

I can’t say this enough. Yes, lightning is beautiful – AND DANGEROUS! Safety comes first! Do not stand outside as the thunderstorm approaches and definitely get off the beach before the storm arrives!

If your goal is to take a lightning photo, think safety first and choose a safe time and location. Before the storm hits, and inside or away from the storm. A great location for Clearwater Beach lightning photography is actually the balcony of a Beachfront Condominium. Mount the camera, cover it from rain. And step indoors. You can set the camera to shoot every few seconds for an extended period of time. Or you can purchase a lightning trigger or pluto trigger to assist with the proper timing of taking the photo when lightning strikes.

If you’re going to be outside, be aware you’re in danger even if you’re away from the storm. But, if you are determined to be outside, be sure to stay far away from the storm and use a telephoto zoom lens for your camera to seem closer than you actually are.

Most summer vacations won’t be traveling with large DSLR cameras and full gear bag, they’ll just have their smartphone. You can still get some great lightning photos on smartphones as well!

Clearwater Beach lightning photography tips for smartphone users

  • Keep safety in mind!
  • Put the phone on a stable surface, tripod or Gorillapod.
  • Disable sounds / notifications (put in airplane mode) to stop calls and texts from shaking your phone while taking photos.
  • Disable Flash.
  • ISO – Set sensitivity low.
  • Shutter Speed – set to a couple of seconds.
  • Focus – Set on a distant area and lock the focus.
  • White balance can be adjusted for the proper coloring. Take a few shots and experiment with these settings to find the one you like.
  • Timer – Set a timer if you can to take photos every few seconds.

Experiment with these settings and find what works best for you. Take a lot of photos and choose your favorites after. After the storms over, review your photos and edit your favorites. You can use apps such as Instagram, VSCO and even Adobe Lightroom right on your phone!

Stay safe and have fun!

Clearwater Beach Shells

Despite the picture above, the best Clearwater Beach shells don’t grow on trees!

Searching for Clearwater Beach Shells

If you’re searching for seashells down by the Clearwater Beach seashore, you’ll definitely find some! But to find the best Clearwater Beach seashells, you’ll have to know where to search!

If you’re walking along Clearwater Beach with your toes in the water, you’ll find some shells. But to find larger shells and unique shells, it’s best to head towards North Clearwater Beach. South Clearwater Beach is where the majority of large hotels and resorts are located. This makes south beach more crowded and more people are picking up the same shells you’re looking for.

So if you’re searching for shells, walk north past Pier 60 and head past the area of the beach that has all the Clearwater Beach Lifeguard Towers. You’ll walk past the beachfront restaurants, hotels, resorts, and beachfront condominiums. Once you’re passed this area, you’ll be walking in front of some beautiful beachfront homes. This area of Clearwater Beach the sand doesn’t stretch as far back. It becomes more narrow and much less crowded! This area of North Clearwater Beach will be less populated increasing your chance of finding some truly beautiful and unique shells.

The further north you walk, the truer this becomes! You can actually walk all the way to Caladesi Island State Park! You’re guaranteed to find some unique shells here! This is the area where the photo of the shells hanging in the tree came from! It is a long walk though. If you’re not up for the long walk, you can also drive through Dunedin and out to Honeymoon Island. Honeymoon Island is also a great beach for finding shells, and there’s a ferry that will take you from Honeymoon Island to Caladesi Island.

Another great location for finding Clearwater Beach shells is actually just across the Sand Key Bridge. If you take Gulf Boulevard from South Clearwater Beach towards Sand Key, you’ll find Sand Key Park on your right side just after crossing over Clearwater Pass.

Combine searching for seashells with visiting Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium! In addition to the aquarium, you can take a Sea Life Safari Boat Tour! During this tour you’ll cruise through the intracoastal waters surrounding Clearwater Beach, learning about dolphins, sea birds and other marine life as you go! The boat will also stop at a shell island providing a great opportunity to find some Clearwater Beach seashells!
