Clearwater Beach – Things To Do (other than the 2021 Super Bowl)

Clearwater Beach has a ton of wonderful family-friendly activities. So if football isn’t your thing, don’t worry there’s plenty more to do.

Is Clearwater Beach Dog Friendly? Dog friendly beaches in the Clearwater Beach area.

The question of whether Clearwater Beach is dog friendly or not is often asked. The official answer is a simple no. “Dogs are not allowed on Clearwater Beach.”

…but when you are on the beach, you’ll often see dogs going for walks. Dogs aren’t allowed and we do not condone breaking the rule, but it seems to be enforced more strictly on the south beach side of Clearwater Beach. When you head to the north beachside, you’ll see more dogs. Not a lot of dogs, but in the mornings you’ll see them out for beach walks on leashes.

While it says that dogs are not allowed on Clearwater Beach when you walk further north into the North Clearwater Beach residential area there are signs at the public beach access points that say leashes are required for dogs in that area. Keep in mind, there’s no public beach parking in those areas so it would take a decent walk on the sidewalk with your dog to even get up to the area.

If you’re on vacation in the Clearwater Beach area and have your dog with you, please stay informed of the local dog rules. You can take your dogs with you in many areas as long as it stays on a leash. There’s also a fenced-in dog park at Sand Key Park and a dog-friendly beach area at Honeymoon Island located in Dunedin, Florida.

Clearwater Beach Sunrise

I’m a night owl. I love staying up late. Sunsets are beautiful and don’t mean the end of my day. It’s just a lovely break before a fun night. Clearwater Beach is known for its beautiful sunsets, but did you know there is also a gorgeous Clearwater Beach Sunrise?

I didn’t… until my daughter was born.

She’s just under two years old, and she loves spending time at the beach! It doesn’t matter what time of day it is. She’s ready to run and play when on vacation. She’s up late, happy, and having fun then out like a light that night but back up, excited, and ready to play sometimes as early as 4 AM. I’m tired! …but enjoying every minute of it.

Now that my daughter has me up to enjoy the sunrise, I realized how much I was missing. The early mornings in Clearwater Beach are beautiful. We go for walks in the early mornings. It’s quite. There’s barely a single car driving down the dark but well-lit streets in the early morning. Other than the very occasional car driving by, we’ll see a few early morning runners to say hi to. Clearwater Beach is full of friendly faces, even at 5 AM. Well, not FULL of friendly faces at 5 AM… but there are a few other people awake, and they’re all friendly. Later in the day, the sidewalks become full.

Our early morning walks consist of walking and looking at the colorful glowing lights of the different signs as we walk towards the intercoastal waterway. That’s where we watch the sun start to come up. It’s beautiful to see the warm and color lights begin to appear behind the buildings on Island Way Estates, downtown Clearwater and Dunedin. The backlight buildings often reflect perfectly in the calm waters. It’s beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. Usually, the only thing to be heard is a few birds and the giggles of my daughter as they fly by.

I’m still far from a morning person, but if you are (or if your kids are), take a walk and enjoy the Clearwater Beach sunrise on the intercoastal side of the island. Our two favorite areas are by the boat docks next to the Clearwater Beach Library & Recreation Complex or off the Papaya Street Plaza at the c0rner of Papaya Street and East Shore Drive.

After the sunrises, we head back to the beach. My daughter is similar to all kids and hates sunscreen. So she gets to enjoy that first early part of the day building sandcastles and playing in the Gulf of Mexico sans sunscreen… all before breakfast.

If you’re a morning person, where’s your favorite morning spot?

Not far from Clearwater Beach you can find a totally different beach experience. You can find a much smaller beach with tree lines even touching into the ocean. This beautiful area provides almost private beach areas during the week. This area is known as Caladesi Island. There are two ways to access Caladesi Island. You can drive to Honeymoon Island in the Dunedin area and take a ferry to Caladesi Island, or you can walk to Caladesi Island from Clearwater Beach. It’s a long walk, but the directions are easy… just keep walking North on Clearwater Beach!

In my opinion, the best time to visit Caladesi Island is during the week. Look up days when the Ferry isn’t running and you’ll have the whole place to yourself!

3. Bok Tower Gardens

Bok Tower Gardens is a “must-see Florida attraction” centrally located between Tampa and Orlando among rolling hills of citrus! Our nearly 50 acres of Olmsted gardens, 2.5-acre children’s garden Hammock Hollow, 20-room Pinewood Estate Mediterranean-style mansion, and the 205-foot art deco and neo-Gothic Singing Tower carillon is a place that has fascinated millions of Florida visitors.”

6. Fort De Soto

“Whether you are sitting on the beach or kayaking near the still water’s edge at Fort De Soto, you find yourself absorbed in the abundance of natural beauty for as far as the eye can see. The complexity of the ecology is not immediately apparent, but the park offers the greatest diversity of systems just about anywhere. Emerging from the wealth of birdlife, sea life, wildlife, and plant life is the majestic tapestry called Fort De Soto.”

7. Zootampa

“Five-time winner of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence (2010-2015), ZooTampa at Lowry Park is one of the most popular zoos in the southeastern US, with over 1 million visitors annually. The Zoo originated in the 1930s as a municipal department with a small number of Florida native species. It grew gradually throughout the next four decades but struggled to meet the developing professional standards of modern zoos. In 1982, community leaders created the Lowry Park Zoo Association to take over management of the Zoo for the City of Tampa with the goal of creating a world-class zoo through a public-private partnership. The Association then became the Lowry Park Zoological Society of Tampa, Inc., as it remains today. Working with a national zoo designer, the Society was able to create a modern, 24-acre facility that opened to the public in 1988 and shortly after earned Accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). ZooTampa has now grown to what now encompasses 56 acres of naturalistic animal exhibits in a lush, tropical garden setting. The Zoo offers popular educational programming, fun recreational amenities, up-close animal encounters, and engaging seasonal events for which it has won accolades as one of the country’s most family-friendly zoos.”

8. Sunken Gardens

Sunken Gardens is a botanical paradise in the midst of a bustling city. As St. Petersburg’s oldest living museum, this 100-year-old garden is home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region.

Unwind as you stroll through meandering paths, lush with exotic plants from around the world. Explore cascading waterfalls, beautiful demonstration gardens, more than 50,000 tropical plants, and flowers.”

11. Ybor City

“There is so much more to explore in Ybor! It’s not just Tampa’s playground, it’s historically different with a thriving influx of growing corporations and small businesses, eclectic retail stores, diverse restaurants, and a growing number of new residential units for people calling Ybor City home.

Conveniently located just northeast of downtown, Ybor City is the only neighborhood on Florida’s west coast to be designated a National Historic Landmark District. Founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, the district has enjoyed a rich and diverse culture for more than a century.”

12. Ballast Point Park and Pier

“Name for the spot where arriving ships would off-load their ballast to enter the harbor, Ballast Point Park and Pier is located in a quiet neighborhood of South Tampa. It features a wonderful splash park for the kids, a large playground area, shade trees, and picnic tables. One of the most impressive features of the park is the view of the downtown skyline and Davis Islands. There is a long pier that juts out into the Bay and a conveniently located bait house if you wish to try your hand at fishing. Alternatively, you can grab a bite at the Taste of Boston restaurant.
